Mobile Health
I had to go in for my annual physical and drug test yesterday for the Home Care Attendant Program that I get paid by. It has got to be the most horrible experience. You have to go sit in a room full of people for EVER waiting for someone to call you into the back room where you pee in 2 cups and then wait again.... holding your pee. Most of the people that are there don't speak English. (they don't pay their home attendants much at all, so it's not exactly a job taken by educated Americans) But there was ONE other English speaker there. She sat next to me, pee in hand, and said... "well there's nothing uncomfortable about this!". Apparently she's not used to sitting in such close proximity to a dozen other people holding their pee. Anyway. You wait for EVER again. Then a nurse calls you into a little cubicle made up of a big fake wall and sliding door. She takes your pee, your blood, and gives you a PPD test. (That's the Tuberculosis test where they inject some liquid just under your skin, making a little bubble on your arm. I have to go back on Friday so they can look at my arm and make sure there isn't a reaction of some kind. Yay.) Anyway. When the Nurse is done with you you go back out and... can you guess?... wait for EVER until a Dr. calls you into a tiny examination room. They weigh you, measure you, ask you if you smoke, drink, or do drugs, and a variety of other health questions. They look at your eyes, your throat, listen to your heart, your breathing, make you reach for the sky, touch your toes, then send you on your marry way. You are with a nurse or doctor for a total of maybe 10 minutes. Total time at the mobile health center??? An hour and a half. Bring a book.
